As a lifelong solar enthusiast and environmentalist, Susan’s work as Program Director of K-12 Education at the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) reflects her passion for education, renewable energy and the environment. Her mission at FSEC is to increase energy and environmental literacy by educating K-16 teachers, students and the public on the results of the research conducted at FSEC. Her efforts have yielded more than 15 million dollars in grant money used to educate students, teachers and the public. Projects include installation of solar + storage systems at Florida schools that double as emergency shelters; the implementation of hundreds of hands-on professional development workshops and summer institutes for teachers; the development of free, inquiry-based renewable energy curriculum; and the creation of outreach events including EnergyWhiz, a unique renewable energy-focused celebration of learning, involving tens of thousands of students.
