Solar thermal energy systems capture the sun’s thermal energy to heat water or air. In Florida, solar thermal energy systems are commonly used to heat swimming pools or to supplement the energy used to heat water in a home or business. It can also be used in steam turbines for electric generation. Solar water heating systems are readily available in Florida, and are a low-cost renewable energy solution. On average, more than 12,000 solar water heating systems are installed in Florida each year.
